Gary Stafford

Managing Director
BSc (Hons, Mining Engineering), MAusIMM

Mr Stafford is a mining engineer with 27 years of experience in the mining industry, initially in engineering and management positions at coal and gold mines with CRA, BHP and Barrack Mine Management and later in company management with Saracen Minerals Limited (a subsidiary of Crusader Limited) and then PanAust. Mr Stafford is also a Director of Puthep Company Limited (Thailand).

Appointed Managing Director of PanAust on 7 March 1996, Mr Stafford is also a member of the Nominations Committee.


Fred Hess

Executive General Manager – Southeast Asia
BSc (Hons), PhD, MAusIMM

Fred Hess is a metallurgist with over 30 years’ experience, largely in the management of copper and gold mining operations. Before joining PanAust, he managed the Macreas Gold Mine in New Zealand and the Mt Gordon Copper Mine in Australia following a career with WMC Resources and Bougainville Copper. He is responsible for the Company's overseas operations, feasibility studies, projects and concentrate logistics for Laos and Thailand. Fred Hess is based predominantly in Laos.

David Hairsine

Chief Financial Officer
MFTA (Senior)

David Hairsine joined PanAust in 2004 and is responsible for management of all financial and administrative requirements both in Australia and with the Company’s interests overseas. In addition, he plays an important commercial role and is responsible for concentrate marketing. David has a wealth of financial experience gained by working in senior commercial, project development and treasury roles within the mining industry over many years.
David served as Company Secretary until February 2007.

Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh is responsible for the Company's internal mergers and acquisitions capability, investor relations, and corporate strategies for the future growth of the Company. Joe is a mining engineer and geophysicist with 20 years’ experience in the minerals and financial services industries, mainly in Australia, Europe and Africa.back to top

Paul Scarr

Company Secretary and General Counsel
B Comm, LLB (Hons), Grad Dip. App.Corp.Gov.

Mr Scarr is responsibile for the company secretarial function, corporate governance issues and the legal function. Paul is a lawyer with 17 years' experience, and has particular expertise in advising clients in the mining industry in Australia, Papua New Guinea and South East Asia. He has a Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance. He provides advice in relation to the Company's obligations under the Corporations Act and the ASX Listing Rules.

Dan Brost

General Manager Geology
BSc Economic Geology, MAusIMM, SEG, SME

Dan Brost is a geologist with over 20 years' of experience in the mineral industry, specialising in base and precious metals, mainly in North America, South America and Australasia. He has been involved in exploration, project development and mine operations with Cyprus Minerals and more recently, BHP Billiton. Dan is responsible for managing PanAust’s geological program, including the discovery of new targets and the exploration of existing mineral assets, as well as resource evaluation and contributing to new project development.

Adrian Bell

General Manager Human Resources and Sustainability
BBus, MBA

Adrian Bell is responsible for all aspects of human resources. This includes recruitment, industrial-relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, as well as sustainability, which includes occupational health and safety, environment and community, both domestically and overseas. Adrian has over 20 years' experience in human resources and community relations within the mining industry.

Rob Usher

General Manager Phu Kham Operations

Rob Usher is responsible for the management of the Phu Kham Operations. Rob is a mining engineer with more than 20 years' experience in the international mining industry, having worked at operations in Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, USA, Canada and Tanzania.

Alistair Maclean

General Manager External Affairs
BA (Hons), LLM (International)

Alistair is responsible for relations with external stakeholders, in particular government and communities, for PanAust activities in Laos and Thailand. Before joining PanAust in 2008, Alistair had a 20 year career with the Australian foreign service, including positions to Bangkok and Washington and as Ambassador to Laos from 2004-2007. In 2007, he was a Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister John Howard, focused on energy, resources and environment issues.

Peter Walker

Peter is a metallurgist with 30 years experience in the mining industry, largely in the commodities of nickel, copper and gold. Prior to joining PanAust, he held positions in engineering and management roles for Aditya Birla, Resolute Limited, WMC Resources and CRA. He is responsible for feasibility studies and providing technical support to the Company's operations in Laos.
